Primary School at Victoria Street

Saint Anthony's Boys' School 6B Class of 1989

A primary school classmate, Edwin Kheng (pictured above), recently scanned and uploaded a couple of photos from our days in Saint Anthony’s Boys’ School.

It was like coming across the greatest treasure!

I was happy, sad and paralysed all at one go.

Happy to experience a time warp through these photos.

Sad to see my form teacher who passed away.

Paralysed because I can’t bring myself to write about my primary school days.

I’ve also been sitting on a bunch of photos I took in 2006 of the school building as it is now. Ok, as it stood then, since almost two years have passed. There’s supposed to be a blog post. At least, I annotated those photos.

P.S. Hmmm… I wonder what Miss Tan would have made of blogging. Bet she would have used it in the classroom. =)

Weekend of upsets

It began with… United losing to Portsmouth. Damn it!

Then Barnsley followed up their Liverpool heroics by dumping Chelsea out. Yay!

Across the Causeway, Barisan Nasional - political party, not a football team - could only muster a simple majority in parliament. Hooray for now, but the fragile opposition coaliton might crumble, leading the way for a BN return to triumph in four or five years’ time.*

And the Arsenal were held to a draw by lowly Wigan. *grin* Are Arsenal the new Liverpool? Heheh…

Speaking of Liverpool, they are the only one of the top four teams which had a good weekend. It’s ok. It’s just Newcastle that they whacked. Just one more nail in the Geordies’ coffin.

I’d just “‘luv it” if they go down.

Before all these upsets, I went to Labrador Nature Reserve (you do know it is a Nature Reserve, right?) on Saturday afternoon with the Toddycats and took some photos. (Photoset is arranged humans first, then flora, fauna and scenery.) For the first time in quite a while, I’m satisfied with the photos I took. Must build on this.

* P.S. Did you know that the Democratic Action Party - part of the loose opposition alliance in Malaysia - is related to Singapore’s People’s Action Party? The similar name and the logo colours are big hints.

Michelle and Jason’s Wedding

Jason and Michelle

I was over in KL and PJ during the last weekend of 2007 for Michelle’s wedding. It was a beautiful church ceremony and a terrific dinner.

Childhood sweethearts getting married despite being apart and despite religious differences… who says fairy tales don’t come true?

The Pintos visit New Zealand’s South Island

The Pintos

After a lot of culling, post-processing, geo-tagging and what have you… I have finally uploaded my family’s New Zealand trip photos on Flickr.

There are a few photos I will have to touch up. I’m just happy I’ve finally uploaded them.

Now, to KL this evening for Michelle’s wedding. Back in Singapore in 2008!

Goodbye, Angsana

Each branch was like a mini tree

It was a cloudy, windy morning when they cut you down.

I watched from a distance as they removed your branches.

You still looked majestic as they stripped you of your crown.

Each branch looked like a tree in its own right.

You must have seen so many things over the past 80 years.

Countless vehicles. Maybe even Japanese tanks during World War II.

The cemetery behind you made way for a housing estate.

The greenery next to you gave way to a junior college.

The changes must have been amazing.

Did you wonder if you might have to go too?

When they put the concrete barrier around you, you must have felt safe.

Protected.

Little did you know that it was to become your tomb.

What were the motorists thinking as they drove past?

A funeral procession.

I stayed for about an hour and a half, witnessing your slow demise.

It was painful to watch.

The workers were not even close to cutting you down when I left.

That’s how big you are.

Or were.

The next time I go by, there will be nothing but a stump.

Eventually, your tomb will be removed so that the forked road can be rejoined.

Which is the point of all this.

More photos here and a short video, taken from inside a bus, of the removal crew.
