Whoops! Looks like I wasn't clear. This blog at deadpoetscave.com was wiped clean.

Thankfully, I followed the upgrade instructions when going from 2.1.2 to 2.5.1, which involved backing up the database and the files before doing anything. I managed to restore the blog from that backup.

I guess my concern is not so much about backing up the database and all that. Rather, I want my blog to still exist after I pass on. This domain and everything on it will go down once payment stops. That's why I have started cross-posting to the wordpress.com site.

Heh. I'm assuming wordpress.com remains free and outlives me though.

So you're referring to your wordpress.com blog getting wiped? THe most important thing to backup is out database, but it'll probably work only on our self-hosted servers. http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/
