A primary school classmate, Edwin Kheng (pictured above), recently scanned and uploaded a couple of photos from our days in Saint Anthony’s Boys’ School.
It was like coming across the greatest treasure!
I was happy, sad and paralysed all at one go.
Happy to experience a time warp through these photos.
Sad to see my form teacher who passed away.
Paralysed because I can’t bring myself to write about my primary school days.
I’ve also been sitting on a bunch of photos I took in 2006 of the school building as it is now. Ok, as it stood then, since almost two years have passed. There’s supposed to be a blog post. At least, I annotated those photos.
P.S. Hmmm… I wonder what Miss Tan would have made of blogging. Bet she would have used it in the classroom. =)

/ Monday, 17 March 2008The diagonal white and green striped tie (either hook-on or with a runner band collar) brings back wonderful memories during my primary school days at SMS. All CBS primary schools has the same iconic tie. Wish you heartfelt memories.

/ Monday, 17 March 2008Mine was the one with the elastic band. And if you ‘graduated’ to SJI, you have real tie (lighter shade of green for the stripes) to wear on Mondays.
Things were so much simpler then, right?

/ Monday, 17 March 2008Hi Kenneth
It is great to see the photographs. Brings back a lot of memories from my own school days here in Australia. You are lucky to have photographs such as these.
Were you a good boy at school? I got the cane quite a few times in P2 for faking farts along with my partner in crime Paul McMahon. Sister Vergilius would make us stand in the corner where we still continued to ‘fart’.
Hope to catch up with you soon,
Cheers
John

/ Monday, 17 March 2008Nice post, Kenneth. Makes me want to blog about my primary school days! It’ll be more of finding time to do so, in light of the many librarian-related posts that I have in my draft folder. :)

/ Tuesday, 18 March 2008@ John Larkin Very lucky, indeed! Thanks for sharing that anecdote. Heheh… I don’t think I was that naughty in school.
@ RockyRacoon Ah, small world once again. You know Edwin! Yup, that’s definitely him.
@ Ivan Chew & Kevin Ok, go dig for old photos! I’m expecting a “primary school days” post soon from both of you. Just photos is fine, no need to ramble. ;)

/ Tuesday, 18 March 2008Yes, was in SMS and scraped thru PSLE at 1976 to get into SJI for the next 4 years. The motto “Ora Et Labora” still rings in my ears. Great to link up with fellow Josephians.

/ Wednesday, 19 March 2008Indeed, this is Edwin in the flesh.
Childhood memories are quite like chocolate. Bitter-sweet. Good that I like dark chocolate better.
Too bad I din have those pics of us brushing our teeth along the drain in the courtyard, or drinking those cute milk packets.
Those days were fun…

/ Monday, 1 December 2008Very nice photos you have here, I’m from class 6A(1985) I too remember Joyce Tan but she never taught us. I was quite a prankster in those days always getting public caning or sent to Principle’s office. Wonder how is Tan Hai San or Mr Goh or brother lawrence(I’m guessing the right name). Other teachers I remember are Mrs Tan(dimple on the chin) Mrs Anthony(Indian lady maths teacher), Mr Kung english teacher(he’s the best and funniest always sporting elvis pressly kind of hairstyle).
If you like looking at photos, there is a shop called the heritage along Jalan Sultan next to Muslim Food stall.
93 Jalan Sultan #01-01 (no vested interest, just sharing info here)
They have tons of very old photos each going for $2-3 and other 60-80′s parapenalia/antiques. And I’m sure the owner has more stashed away somewhere. I managed to snap up a bunch of very old photos of places around bras basah/coleman street(places of my youth) unfortunately for photos of waterloo street there are none.
Check it out,
nice blog btw.
