Strange Maps

Australia - Proposed States (1838)

I love a good map.

If you like maps too, you’ll want to check out Strange Maps.

Metroblogging Melbourne brought this blog to my attention in their post about Guelphia, one of 10 states in a proposed subdivision of Australia, which encompasses most of modern Victoria, New South Wales and a small part of South Australia.

Guelphia?

The wikipedia entry on these proposed states points out that they were “were geometric divisions of the continent, and did not take into account soil fertility, aridity or population”.

Indeed. Who’s going to want to live in… (fill in the blank).

P.S. Spain and Portugal are there for size contrast.

“Australia, according to the Proposed divisions.” from The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, Volume 8, 1838 to accompany “Considerations on the Political Geography and Geographical Nomenclature of Australia by Captain Vetch, Royal Engineers, F.R.S.” According to Wikipedia, presumably in the public domain.

Singapore is Clean and Green. Not.

Singapore is clean and green

Dear fellow-Bishanites and visitors to Bishan,

The Today newspaper distribution stands are not trash bins.

There are dustbins close by. Even better if you recycle the trash. If I find recycling bins around Junction 8, I will let you know.

Until then, at least keep the estate I live in clean. Okay?

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Long-time Bishan Resident

P.S. This only goes to prove what I always tell visitors to Singapore: We’re not clean. We just have many people cleaning up after us.

Defunct

I haven’t posted for a while. So much so that this blog has been labelled defunct. It’s only been slightly over two weeks! (Come to think of it, what is the longest stretch that I’ve gone without blogging here since I started in early 2003?) The screenshot above shows my actual defunct cave. I left my Blogger cave for Wordpress more than a year ago.
