Here lies the former National Library

[20070120] Here lies the former National Library

In today’s TODAY, NMP Siew Kum Hong writes about the tunnel I love to hate.

The space the tunnel freed up should be used as a park. SMU will probably beg to differ, but I feel we are sorely lacking in open green spaces in the city. As it is, the open space above Orchard and Somerset MRT stations are giving way to yet more mall (and office and residential) area. The Uni students should have the opportunity to smell the roses (or at least the grass) and be able to contemplate life in the Garden City. In an actual garden.

Why does the figure 6,500,000 ring in my head?

Must you remind us that our govt doesn’t listen to us? And better get used to that magic figure.

Must register our dissatisfaction so that their covert anonymous online counter-insurgency unit can take note.

Hope they do more than take note.

Last Sat I had a surprise door-to-door visit from the MP of my area - a very young looking Eurasian by the name of Christopher de Souza, handing out his name card. And all this time I thot my mp was Vivien Balakrishnan. First time I see my MP becos every election it’s walkover. I wanted to joke, “I thot election over not long ago wat?” but decided better not; he might not take it in right spirit. Even if he does, his kakis may not.

Ahh… he’s a year older than me. We were schoolmates in SJI.

Good to know that he’s walking around and at least touching base with his constituents.

Incidentally, my uncle has the same name. (And he’s also a Josephian.) During the elections, my uncle kept on getting phone calls from reporters, who must have looked through the phone book to try to get the younger De Souza’s number.

My uncle is quite the joker. I’m surprised he didn’t play along!

I too lament the loss of the old National Library. This distinguishing monument held so many fond memories for me. But now, whenever I pass by the same place, what’s left there is only a hole in the ground, literally. So sad. :(

i think i stepped into the old national library only once in my entire lifetime. what a pity. back then when i needed less resources, stepping into the space surrounded by brick walls was somewhat surreal. now i shld have cherished what we had. :(

Actually. it’s not just the library but the surroundings that we miss dearly; such as the makan stalls of Waterloo St, the 2nd book shops at Bras Basah, MPH etc. which I blogged about here.

Yah, the whole area has transformed since the days I attended primary school along Victoria Street. It is almost unrecognisable.

Speaking of which, my post about Saint Anthony’s Boys’ School is still in my draft box.

@ goodshithappens Ahh, you follow my geekess’ blog, yes? Nice of you to drop by. =)
