Blogging Nexus 2007

… even though I can’t be there.

Yup, I have a bad cold and sore throat. So, I’m home. (Already worked through half a box of tissues since waking up.)

So, this is my attempt at being there without being physically present. At the end of the day, that’s what Nexus 2007 is supposed to be about - enabling technologies. Let’s see how enabled we can be!

As I type, Siva is giving me SMS updates, which I’ll be blogging. (He can’t liveblog today.) He’s sending them faster than I can type! Also, there’s Twitter, a concurrent chatroom and a Flickr photostream (rss).

Siva’s Live SMS… err… feed:

0906 I am way in front, 7th row. Turns out they are NUS alumni who studied in stanford for a year and thought it a good idea

0924 Figured you can blog it! Met some guys from singapore power, singtel, hwa chong - did cleanup last year, also ashwin’s house mate, divya.

0927 Walter, ivan, ben, kevin here. Engineering guy next to me interested in biological systems. Now nat talking.

0932 What is web 2.0. 1. Apps moving from desktop to web. 2. AJAX - functionality and responsiveness. cites mac’s guidelines. 3. sharing data with 3rd party software. cites itunes.

0935 4. Competitive advantage - flickr roll out six upgrades a day. Hey see you on screen! Campfire.

I discover the liveblog.

0939 6. Analyse everyone’s data, cites amazon. 7. Startup - collaborate. Tech, business partners. third element - designer. Emphasises role of designer in making things useable. Heh, your speciality, tell your boss.

Hahaha! I will!

0942 Google has centralised power to data centres. Going over different types of competitive advantages. Got live blogging i see. So will concentrate and send other impressions.

0945 Funny how ladybug discovers nus enterprise is a partner this morning!

0947 Nat says moore’s law is over? Says follow via alpha geeks. Look at techmeme.com, del.icio.us! What are they interested in.

i.e. what the users are interested in?

0951 Organiser - first ear nus undergrad and one recent nus grad. 22 of them in tdm.

0953 One aim was to create informal culture to motivate community innovation.

0957 Talks about the 8 month process that got this going. Now thanks audience who participated - crowdsource event.

0958 Says ida not fuddy-duddy!

Heheh. =) Who ever said that?

1009 This campfire thing - wonder if can work in bio circles at seminars for post talk discussions at least.

Finally caught up on the messages in between blowing my nose. Feels like I’m Siva’s secretary! Nothing much happening on Nexus’ Twitter. Trying to follow Campfire in between but don’t have the context - what’s being said on scene. Wish there was a webcast!

1014 Microsoft guy cites apple too.

Well, the devil can quote scripture for his purposes. =P

1018 Saw ken wye - after 14 years in govt service, joined microsoft. From spending to making money. Best point he makes - you cannot miss the boat, so many trends, can always pick yourself up.

Now twittering Siva’s updates for November.

1022 Girija pande, tata, never too old to start. He got into asia-pacific late. David Dan, reminds govt drives direction because communist. Remember who’s boss.

Siva, have to ask you to clarify that.

1043 MS guy. Ex-govt guy, says don’t make open source a religion!

Heh. Expected something like that, based on the backchat on campfire. You can’t force people not to be fanatical about their beliefs. MS shouldn’t be made a religion either.

1045 Tata guy says open source has become relevant to govt and commerce.

I hope this doesn’t descend into a MS v open source slingfest.

1047 Lenovo guy says open source linked to low labour cost.

How so?

1048 Ladybug says this guy famous at events (referring to a participant). Won’t leave mic. Banned from some places.

1053 Gosh, whole panel responding, great guys, they need a challenge. Of course this shifted the focus off the open source debate.

1055 So the guy asking the question did a good job stimulating the session. Too business-oriented for me, although interested to hear what they are saying.

1056 Is open source a threat - is google losing its direction with adsense.

1104 Lots of social activists, open source types, but panel more business-problem solving oriented. Somewhat different thought flow. Pity panel cannot see screen.

Yup, can see that from the backchat.

1107 So funny, request for power sources! Battery tech still limiting!

1139 With vantan and ladybug - Gave Kevin enthusiastic cheer! Room crowded. We all see your twittering at tea. Kevin being screwed by a pc. Vantan with a dell, just found power, Yaaay!

1143 Front row walter, preetam, Coleman, ivan, ben. Kevin says top anon wiki contributor-singapore!

Argh! Wish I was there for this one.

1145 Stomp editor thinks she knows who! Kevin giving summaries. Room crowded, 80 per cent blog. Kevin suggests we have a giving culture.

Nah, more like serious bloggers (or is it those who take blogging seriously?) are the market segment that would attend this conference.

1148 Organisers bringing in chairs! Oh my news examples.

1151 Example of i-reporter, CNN, yahoo has one and finally, wired with assignment zero!

1154 Panel about to start now, vantan blogging on her site. Check there as well.

Vantan’s Nexus coverage.

1200 Stomp editor says crowd wants to be heard, a reflection of a new singapore.

I feel we’ve always wanted to be heard. There are just many more ways of going about it now. As much as I don’t like Stomp, that’s one of the many outlets.

1203 James says he has no control and no content, explaining tomorrow.sg - wonder how many have heard of this portal.

With this crowd, perhaps 30-50%.

1215 CNET lady talked about london 7/7, stomp talks about tremors, with info coming in, there is responsibility-they have to think about how to organise the information. James talked about the iraqi blogger and then independence of blogging.

1216 All talk about loser-generated content! So funny to hear this.

Loser-generated content?? Just as I twitter, “Siva’s gone silent”, he sms-es:

1244 James asked about donation boxes on webpage, mentions cat welfare as receipient. Crowd laughs and claps.

from walter Nice piece of tag team action there between you and Siva. I was switched on to your updates via Twitter’s mobile feature. Nice piece of work!

BTW, I am very slow in my updates and emails lately due to the colossal amount of work I faced lately. Hope things will improve soon. ;)

@ walter Walter, my blog ate your comment! I received notification that your comment was sent to the moderation queue, but when I logged in, it was nowhere to be found. Reproduced it from the notification email I received.

No worries with the delayed updates. We all go through those busy periods.
