Overwalk

Over the past 24 hours, most of the people I’ve talked to about the big E share one of a limited range of reactions/sentiments.

  1. Aiyah, so troublesome. Have to vote. / Wah, so lucky! You don’t need to vote.
  2. Vote so and so? Siao ah! Wait I lose my job.
  3. Which constituency am I in? Who were* my MPs?

Those are the three overwhelmingly common reactions. Of course, there are others who are interested. But they are few and far in between.

For those who are interested, you can decide for yourselves. You can find out about the latest rallies from the Singapore Police Elections Liaison Office. (Got this via Sg Election ‘06.) I hope publicizing all the rallies isn’t construed as “persistently promoting political views”. I’m promoting informed choices.

If you can’t make it for the rallies, then you can check out the parties’ websites. In alphabetical order:

Remember: Hear it straight from their mouths.

Update: Channelnewsasia’s General Election site has links to several pertinent elections resources, including a Rally Calendar.

*A point brought up by a friend: With Parliament dissolved, there are technically no MPs and no Ministers. So why does the press refer to the respective individuals by their (for the moment) non-existent posts?

Because they don’t know any better? Heh, I hope that isn’t the case.

    Hey Kenneth,

Is voting compulsory in Singapore ?
    Its not in Malaysia.
    It is in Australia.

Ha ! The same attitude rules in Malaysia and Australia too !
(just trying to make light of a depressing phenomenon)

Yup, voting is compulsory in Singapore, as it is in Australia. Very few democratic countries have compulsory voting actually.

Funny, I was going to ask you whether voting is compulsory in Malaysia!
