Pedal Ubin! Saturday, 13 May

Pulau Ubin Jetty

Have you ever been to Pulau Ubin?

If you haven’t, it’s about time you go. And if you have, it’s time to take a whole new look at it.

Let the Toddycats! of the Raffles Museum be your two-wheeled guides around one of the last bastions of kampong life in Singapore.

Pedal Ubin! promises to be a morning of discovery as the guides uncover the natural and social heritage of this island.

The next ride is on Saturday, 13 May. Sign up details here.

Still not convinced? Here are some photos to do the talking.

Parking Lot Idiots

Tight

This two-month old blog is dedicated to shaming the Parking Idiots in Singapore.

You know, those who park too close to another lot or worse, those who take up two lots. Those who park with their cars jutting out. Those who park diagonally. Those who park on double-yellow lines. Wannabe Self-proclaimed rally car drivers who think they should be allowed to park off-road.

Mind you, it’s not just big car owners who can’t park. Small car owners are just as bad. Not to be outdone, some motorcyclists show that they can’t park either. Even… cyclists!

The best one? Policemen can’t park properly too.

If you spot a parking idiot, take a photo with your camera - the wonders of mobile phones - and email it to parkingidiot [at] cooltoad [dot] com. You can also print out these handy labels and keep them in your glove compartment for the appropriate occasion.

Thanks Anand, for highlighting this blog. You should blog. (See? I can’t link back to you ‘cos you don’t blog. Actually, I’m not even sure you are reading this.) Email has other uses. =P

Parking Idiots in Singapore was also featured on Mr Miyagi’s blog. I missed his Today article, and I wasn’t subscribed to his feed ’til recently.

Hooray for civic-conscious bloggers!

P.S. To my Malaysian friends… stop sniggering. ;)

Overwalk

Over the past 24 hours, most of the people I’ve talked to about the big E share one of a limited range of reactions/sentiments.

  1. Aiyah, so troublesome. Have to vote. / Wah, so lucky! You don’t need to vote.
  2. Vote so and so? Siao ah! Wait I lose my job.
  3. Which constituency am I in? Who were* my MPs?

Those are the three overwhelmingly common reactions. Of course, there are others who are interested. But they are few and far in between.

For those who are interested, you can decide for yourselves. You can find out about the latest rallies from the Singapore Police Elections Liaison Office. (Got this via Sg Election ‘06.) I hope publicizing all the rallies isn’t construed as “persistently promoting political views”. I’m promoting informed choices.

If you can’t make it for the rallies, then you can check out the parties’ websites. In alphabetical order:

Remember: Hear it straight from their mouths.

Update: Channelnewsasia’s General Election site has links to several pertinent elections resources, including a Rally Calendar.

*A point brought up by a friend: With Parliament dissolved, there are technically no MPs and no Ministers. So why does the press refer to the respective individuals by their (for the moment) non-existent posts?

For those of you that have the privilege of voting: Please, find out what’s happening around you. Read things straight from the horses’ mouth.

I’m just appalled that some people don’t even know which constituency…

Okay.

I must remember, prison got no broadband.
