Metrics

deadpoet's cave metrics

Ever since I switched to WordPress on this domain, I’ve been noticing some unusual site statistics.

For example:

For a while, I had more visitors from Sweden than from Australia. That’s funny, ‘cos I know many more people Down Udder Under than I do from the land of Ikea.

I suddenly have a lot of visitors from Japan. Even more than Singapore visitors. I figure this has something to do with a link to a Japanese expatriate site which I highlighted in my post about Galbiati Gourmet Deli. Just to update that post: they’ve definitely got more than one web reference now. =)

When I had a relatively stable readership, I was glad to note that most of my users use Firefox. Now, with the increase in readership, it’s swung back to Micro$oft’s IE.

Can’t have it all, eh? Anyway, Performancing Metrics powers my site stats, in case you’re interested.

Mum’s cake

Mum's cake

My mum’s been attending baking lessons. She made this chocolate cake yesterday. Looks soooo tempting! Argh!

Those of you who have had the pleasure of tasting my mum’s cooking and baking… you know how hard it is for me to resist. She’s good, and she’s still learning new stuff all the time.

UPDATE My mum has a website. Check it out!

And yes, the more observant readers might have noticed that I have a new toy. =)

Clue 1: The photo is uncropped.

Clue 2: EXIF tells all.

Groupthink

A word and a phrase I learnt while I was studying Mass Communication at Ngee Ann Polytechnic:

Groupthink

Groupthink is a term coined by psychologist Irving Janis in 1972 to describe a process by which a group can make bad or irrational decisions. In a groupthink situation, each member of the group attempts to conform his or her opinions to what they believe to be the consensus of the group… (cont’d)

False consciousness

False consciousness the Marxist hypothesis that material and institutional processes in capitalist society mislead the proletariat — and perhaps the other classes — over the nature of capitalism.

The concept flows from the theory of commodity fetishism — that people experience social relationships as value relations between things… (cont’d)

I’m alive

I'm Alive!

This is just a short post to say that I’m still alive.

Been busy with a lot of small things here and there.

One of those small things is actually this blog.

*You’ve changed your template, again?

Yes.

Actually, I did more than change my template.

You see, WordPress impressed me so much, I decided to go for more powerful hosted version.

I bought a domain and some webspace two Sundays back, had some absolutely frustrating teething problems with my webhost…

Then, I started customizing things a bit.

When I thought I was ready to launch, WordPress released a security update.

Back to square one, I started customizing again. And I’m not done by far.

It’s going to be a while before the look of this site stabilizes.

In the interim, enjoy this user-customizable template. You can change the colour scheme: just click on the flower icon on the right (just below the banner), then choose your preferred colour scheme. Apparently, there are problems viewing that template in IE. *shrug*

BTW, I’ve redirected my old blog here, so you don’t really have to change your bookmarks.

For the RSS-savvy, my FeedBurner feed is still operational. http://deadpoetscave.com/feed redirects to my FeedBurner feed. Cool, eh? And I have a RSS feed for comments too: http://deadpoetscave.com/comments/feed

Update The default WordPress feed gets updated a lot faster. I think the redirect slows things down for FeedBurner. You can subscribe to either one, they both will count towards FeedBurner’s stats.

Backup Cave

Backup Cave

In a recent post, I mentioned I was squatting on a WordPress blog - with my preferred username - just in case I decide to give up on Blogger.

Tinkering around with WordPress, I decided to reinstate a backup blog. I used to backup on LiveJournal but stopped for some reason or other. Perhaps I trust Google too much. Blogger will never die, right?

I began copying entries manually in reverse chronological order. After copying a month’s worth of entries, I stopped, thinking that I would backup in batches, eventually reaching the most recent post.

Then I clicked on Import.

Using it is simple.

Backup your Blogger template first. Ctrl-A anywhere in your template. Copy and paste into Notepad; save the file. Take note of your blog settings too.

Log out of Blogger.

Log in to Blogger via the Import login page in WordPress.

Let WordPress work its magic. All your posts and comments will be copied automatically.

Peace of mind, eh?

Update Silly me. I forgot to mention you have to register for a blog at WordPress first.
